Web browser is slow or freezes

If you are browsing the web and your web browser seems very slow or freezes, one or more of the following may resolve the problem:

  • If you are using Windows, go to the Control Panel -> Network -> TCP/IP > Dialup adapater -> WINS Configuration and be sure there is a check in "disable WINS resolution". If you are using Windows NT4, uncheck "Use IP header compression" in DUN/RAS by editing the phone book entry: Servers - TCP/IP settings.

  • Be sure there is only one Dial-up Adapater in the Network Control Panel. Multiple TCP/IP components can sometimes cause problems (e.g. AOL Adapter).

  • Your video drivers may need to be updated. A temporary fix is as follows:
    • Use the default mouse pointers.
    • Turn off your desktop wallpaper, screen saver and animated cursors.
    • Turn down your color depth. Right click the desktop and choose Properties | Appearance | Settings.
    • Turn down your graphics hardware acceleration. Go to Start | Settings | Control Panel | System | Performance | Graphics button.

  • Internet Explorer updates may be required:

  • You may have corrupt files psbase.dll and imagehlp.dll files used by Outlook Express/Internet Explorer. Try repairing these files by going to Add/Remove Programs, select Microsoft Internet Explorer and run the repair utility.

  • Telephone line problems (noise causes modem to resend info or automatically drops to a lower speed) resulting in a large number of BLERS, Serial port overruns, CRC errors, etc.. Update modem drivers if available or try a modem Modem Initialization String - disable v.90.

Help us help you! If you contact Covenant ISP support for assistance please write down any error messages you get when trying to connect to the Internet. Include the name and version of your operating system and the exact text of all error messages. Please be aware that some troubleshooting may require uninstallation and reinstallation of operating system files. To ensure that this type of troubleshooting can be accomplished if required, please be sure that you have to have original Operating System CD or Operating system source files on disk on hand.
